Valentine’s Day Printable Activity Ideas

Now you have a range of printable ideas to use at home this Valentine’s Day, what’s next?

The great thing about printables is that you aren’t just limited to a single-use activity. Printables can be used for their core purpose e.g. completing a word search, but you can also extend learning even further through additional activities.

With printables, you can add in extra games, hands-on activities, or creative learning to really practice and review new content with your children. This helps them retain more information and gain an enjoyable experience utilising printables vs. simply completing a worksheet.

Here are some examples of activity ideas you could complete at home with your children while using Valentine’s Day printables:

  1. Create a Treasure Hunt

Hide vocabulary pictures or items from around your home that relate to Valentine’s. Then create clues for you to read aloud or for your children to read in order to find them. Leave the best item till last e.g. chocolate coins, as their treasure to find.

This activity can incorporate flashcards as they already contain pictures. However, if your children love arts and crafts, ask them to get involved in the planning process. They could draw or make items from the crossword or word search puzzles for you to hide around the house.

  1. Write a Story

Often, children don’t actually enjoy the writing part of English. They find it tedious and dull.

But, by focusing on a fun topic, such as Valentine’s Day, it can help encourage your children to give it a try.

Help start them off with the first sentence. You could even take turns writing a sentence with your children to develop a themed story together.

Alternatively, set them a challenge e.g. to include specific vocabulary words, character plot, or grammatical elements.

But whatever you decide, make sure to focus on it being fun and an opportunity for your children to show their creative flair. This way, they can focus on trying their best vs. making mistakes.

Here are a couple of Valentine’s Day writing prompts to get you started:

  • A1: You bake heart-shaped cookies, but they come to life! What do they say?
  • A2: You open a magic box on Valentine’s Day. What’s inside, and what does it do?
  • B1: The Queen of Hearts loses her crown. Write a story about how it is found.
  1. Word Games

Word games are an excellent way to help your children review new vocabulary.

You can focus on words from any printable that your children may be finding a bit difficult and use them in a word game.

Some games to include could be:

  • Pictionary – to practice recognition
  • Boggle – to develop letter recognition and sounds
  • Scrabble – to review spellings.
  1. Role-Play Valentine’s Day

This is a great activity, particularly for children who prefer to be up and moving around as they learn.

After your children make a Valentine’s Day card, role-play giving and receiving cards together.

Think about:

  • What would they say depending on who they gave the card to e.g. a family member, teacher, or friend?
  • What should they say when someone gives them a card?
  • What could they say if they do not have a card to give in return?

  1. Word Hunting

An easy and simple way to extend each printable use is to go on a word hunt.

Unlike the treasure hunt, a word hunt does not require additional planning, resources, or movement.

A word hunt using printables simply means to find specific words within the printable itself. Say aloud a word they need to find, one at a time. You could even focus on grammar too.

This activity can help review new content and find areas that your children may need more practice.

You could make this more fun by having them highlight the words they find with stickers, bright highlighters, or scented pens.

  1. Make a Compliment Chain

Take turns to write a compliment about someone in English on coloured pieces of paper. Cut around it in a heart shape and attach it to a piece of string. Add as many as possible to create a full banner of compliments. This activity boosts writing skills and teaches positive language.

  1. Label Objects

Use everyday items that are around your home to help your children practice new vocabulary. Add labels to your belongings. If you are focusing on Valentine’s vocabulary, you could label items such as chocolate, strawberries, cupcakes, pink, red, heart, teddy bear, etc. With this method, your children can develop stronger vocabulary skills without the need for expensive resources.

  1. Write a Gratitude

Based on the printable theme, ask your children to list five kind of things they could do for others. This activity supports writing practice and encourages positive behaviour.
